Hopes, Dreams, and Marshmallows

Last week was quite a success! See below for some highlights!

In Reading we grew our stamina all the way to 15 minutes of independant reading! We also began talking about the importance of reading books that are "Just Right" for each student. We will talk more this week about using the 5 finger rule to find a book that is perfect for us. The 5 finger rules says that if there are 5 words that you don't on the first or second page, the book probably isn't just right for you.

This week we finished our final draft of our Hopes and Dreams. We spent time reflecting on our goals for the year. Each child chose one particular area they want to improve on this year. We finished our work on these with an incredible gallery walk of our work. We walked around and gave eachother positive feedback on our work.

In Math last week we continued our exploration of classroom materials. We worked with a numberline to 100, and unific cubes.

We finished the week looking at what makes each of us a unique and special part of our community with a chalk talk around the classroom. We will use this strategy many times this year as we use the white board space around the room to share our thoughts. This was a wonderful celebrations of our class community.

To grow our classroom community, we worked with our table teams to create a single sculpture made from marshmallows, toothpicks, and straws. I noticed that students used kind words when sharing materials, comprimised ideas when making a group plan, and worked dilligently to make our classroom clean again.
