First week of school = SUCCESS!!!

What a fantastic way to start the year. It is absolutely evident that each child in this class has so much to contribute. I am blown away! They display such empathy and kindness towards one another, take great pride and ownership of their learning, and are so eager and engaged in all of our learning experiences. In fact, as we were taking time to go over first week of school business (i.e. class and material rules and procedures) many students kept asking, "When are we going to start reading and writing?" I want to take a moment to appreciate the families for instilling your children with such wonderful core values, and the amazing First grade team (Larsen, Jones, Rahn) for preparing these students so well for 2nd grade!

Here are some highlights from this week: - Building reading stamina: We are working toward our goal of reading independently without standing up or talking with our friends for 15 minutes! We are well on our way with 8 minutes and 45 seconds. This meant that all students were actively engaged in a book, and demonstrating strong reading practices (ex. choosing a quiet space to read, good reading postures, tracking with finger, make text-to-self connections while reading). We will continue to build stamina as we establish our Reader's Workshop Literacy Block. - Personal writing journal: All Students got their very own composition notebooks for their writing! We started by writing a reflection about our day. Students will continue to write in their journals at least one time each day. - Chrome books: The kids were SO EXCITED for our laptop exploration! They took such great care of the very special classroom materials and made good choices while working with the computers. Students have now activated their gmail accounts (email addresses and passwords will go home soon!) Each child needs a gmail account given to them by the school in order to access a Chrome Book. Students will not be emailing with these. - ST Math: students have now activated their 2nd grade ST math account. Please let me know if there are any questions about logging in at home - Hopes and dreams: We have started setting goals for ourselves and our class for this year. This week, each student established at least one goal for something they want to learn or improve upon this year in 2nd grade. These will up for you to see at back to school night. Here are some pictures of our week!
